What You Need To Know: Preparing For An Interior Design Consultation

Embarking on a home transformation journey with Interior Couturier starts with an interior design consultation. This is a pivotal first step in transforming your space into a home. It’s a collaborative session where your vision meets my expertise.

The aim is to create personalised design that reflects your lifestyle and desires. Read on to find out the importance of this meeting in your home and my top tips on how you can prepare to make the most of our time together.

Understanding Your Lifestyle and Needs

Your Household

The first part of understanding your home involves finding out the details that shape your daily life. So most importantly, who lives in the home and what does a typical day look like for you? Do you have children, and if so, how many and at what ages? Are pets, whether dogs, cats, or even hamsters and fish, a part of your family? Considering the expat lifestyle in Singapore, does your home frequently host visiting family or friends? We live in a  travel hub. It's not uncommon for grandparents to stay for a week or even longer, or old friends to pop in on their way to somewhere else. Now let’s imagine a household with three young children, including a toddler. On such a project, we'll select furniture that is not only stylish but also safe and durable. And a layout incorporating space to play. Then, for expat families with visiting grandparents, our designs might include a guest room or versatile space that can adapt to host guests.

Understanding your family dynamics is key to creating a tailored design that meets your unique needs. It's about more than aesthetics; it's about making sure the functionality of your home suits your lifestyle.

Designing Around Your Requirements

Identifying the unique needs of each client is key to a personalised design journey. It extends past surface appeal to focus on the practical aspects that make your home functional and comfortable. Whether it’s a dedicated home office for someone working from home, storage solutions to finally get on top of clutter, or planning a kitchen to work seamlessly for keen cook. On a recent project, our client wanted a multifunctional living room. This led to us designing custom furniture that maximised storage, maintaining a sophisticated aesthetic in keeping with the rest of the home. By addressing specific needs, the final design exceeded our clients expectations.

Defining Your Space

How Do You Want To Feel?

In the world of interior design, emotions play a vital role. As humans, we engage with spaces not just visually or practically but also emotionally. We naturally sense the vibes of a room. This explains why certain spaces evoke immediate feelings of calm, coziness, or vibrancy. And why others feel dull, cold, and unwelcoming. It's about tapping into how you want to experience each space. I ask clients to express how they want to feel – relaxed, energised, or inspired and so on. For instance, for a recent condo project, our client wanted their bedroom to be tranquil, dedicated to relaxation. This translated into choosing soothing colours, plush textures and soft, layered lighting.

Understanding your design preferences is like decoding a visual language that reveals the ideal home for you. It's about uncovering what makes you feel at home, it’s not complicated but it needs consideration. We will touch on colours, styles, and furniture. What colours make you smile, and which ones do you prefer to avoid? Do you lean towards modern lines or classic styles? Sharing these insights, even if it's a strong aversion to something you dislike, guides the design process.

Budgets and Timelines

Transparent Budget Talk

One of the common issues we find is clients having an idea of what they want to spend, but not knowing how much it will all cost. I get it; it can be difficult talking about money and for some people, budgets can feel like guarded secrets. But here's the thing—being upfront about your budget isn't about limitations. It's about coming up with a bespoke plan that aligns with your financial comfort zone. This ensures we're on the same page, avoiding any unexpected twists. Your budget guides us to the best furniture, materials, and finishes tailored just for you. Many clients come to us and say “I have X amount to spend on this project” not considering the percentage that is services and labour.  Make sure you have considered this important part, and it’s in your budget.  It’s key to successful project management, not overspending and actually getting the project done.

Think of it as a collaborative effort; the more transparent you are, the more we can tailor a design that's both stunning and suited to your vision.

Managing Timelines

After budget, timelines are another important factor. Realistic expectations are the key; while we all wish for instant transformations, design can take time. Sometimes, styling a living room can be relatively quick, especially if we work with suppliers that have ample supplies of stock. This is great if you are renting in Singapore and need it quickly. However, if we are embarking on construction or ordering custom furniture it can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months. Please tell us if you’re working to a specific date, we will let you know if it’s possible - or not!

A Comprehensive Scope of Work

Importance of a Scope of Work

Your home is a collection of stories, and some items are wrapped up in your history. When it comes to your existing items, it's not about starting from scratch; it's about seamlessly integrating the old with the new. This is what makes our homes interesting and gives it some soul. I encourage clients to share their special pieces, be it a vintage heirloom or a beloved sofa. We then evaluate they can harmoniously coexist with fresh elements. In a recent project, a client had a cherished but well-worn armchair they inherited from their grandfather. This chair had a new lease of life and was restored with new upholstery. It was a win-win for everyone.

Maximising the Consultation

Get Inspired

Many clients come to me and say “I don’t know what my style is”. Me neither! I’m not a mind reader and I don’t like to make assumptions about anyone or their home. The best way to find out is to look. Make a Pinterest board or rip pages from a magazine, make a saved folder in Instagram. When we are together, this will help us speak the same design language. They're like the compass guiding us toward the style, colours and, vibes you love.

The threads of inspiration becomes the roadmap, ensuring we’re on the same page creating a unique aesthetic for your space.

More To Think About

Addressing the unique quirks of your space is like solving a design puzzle. Whether it's an odd shaped room, limited natural light, or a specific lifestyle need, let's talk about it during the consultation. No concern is too small, and every challenge has a solution. Maybe you're a book lover struggling to incorporate a vast collection? Or perhaps the challenge lies in making a compact space multifunctional? Whatever it may be, even the weird and wonderful, let me know so we can tailor the design to fit seamlessly into your life.
